Vets council announces Memorial Day Remembrance
The Caldwell County Veterans Council has finalized plans for the annual Memorial Day Remembrance, scheduled on the Caldwell County Courthouse Square on Monday, May 31, 2010, beginning promptly at 11 a.m.
New to the program this year, a Junior Marine Corps Drill Team from Bedichek Elementary will be performing during the hour-long ceremony geared toward paying tribute
to Caldwell County”s fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines.
Luling native Dredford Shuler will be the keynote speaker at this year”s event. Shuler, who graduated from Luling High School in 1968, was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1969 and served in Vietnam from August 1969 – August 1970.
Honorably discharged, Shuler is married to the former Cynthia Anne Sherrill, and is the father of two and grandfather of one. He is also an ordained minister, and has been the pastor of the Webster AME Church in Gonzales for nearly 12 years.
After Shuler presents his speech, members of the Caldwell County Commissioners” Court will engage in the solemn practice of roll call, reading aloud the names of every Caldwell County resident to have been killed in action during a time of American War, since the Civil War.
That list includes three casualties of the current conflicts in the Middle East.
Although the program begins promptly at 11 a.m., participants are encouraged to arrive early to secure seating in the shade. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome.
