Walter Joaquin, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on March 1, 2024, in Kyle, Texas, at the age of 82.

Walt was born on August 8, 1941, in Taunton, Massachusetts. He answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the Marines in 1959. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and spent time in the Philippines. His dedication and exceptional leadership led him to become a drill sergeant at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, where he imparted his knowledge and instilled discipline in countless recruits.

Following his military service, Walt embarked on a fulfilling career as a high school teacher and coach. He coached several high school sports including football, basketball, baseball and golf for over 30 years. He worked tirelessly to establish athletic programs for small, private Christian schools across Southern California, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless athletes and coaches.   In addition, Walt enjoyed sailing on his boat and accomplished several marathons and half marathons over the years.

On June 24, 1989, Walt married Margaret in Southern California. Together, they moved to Dale, Texas, in 2006 where they enjoyed retirement on their ranch. Walt enjoyed playing golf, his hobby of model trains, taking care of the ranch, and was an active member of the McMahan Volunteer Fire Department, contributing his time and effort to help the community.

Walt is survived by his wife Margaret, six children, 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 11 a.m. at McMahan Baptist Church in Dale, Texas. Friends, family, and members of the community are invited to join to honor and remember Walt’s life.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on behalf of Walter Joaquin to the McMahan Volunteer Fire Department located at 291 Whizzerville Road, Dale, Texas 78616.
