Bobby Lee Roberts
Bobby Lee Roberts, 70, passed into the loving arms of his Lord on Oct. 30, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on Nov. 1, 1935 to Lee and Bessie Roberts in Hallettsville, Texas.
He graduated from Roy Miller High School in Corpus Christi, and received his Bachelor of basketball scholarship, earning All Conference and All American honors his senior year. B
obby was named to the Hall of Honor at Southwest Texas in 1982. While at SWT he met and married Patricia “Trish” Borrer of Waelder. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in July of this year. They were blessed with three wonderful children and their spouses, and nine precious grandchildren.
Bobby loved people of all ages, but especially young people. He devoted his 42 year career to promoting a better learning environment for children both directly and indirectly. He taught and coached for nine years in Lockhart and at Robert E. Lee High School in San Antonio. He was selected to coach the Texas High School South All-Star Basketball team in 1965.
He was a principal at Churchill High School in San Antonio and Lockhart High School in Lockhart. He was superintendent of schools in Blanco and Rockdale. Bobby was the Executive Director of Region VI Service Center in Huntsville until his retirement in 1999.
Bobby served on the State Membership Committees for T.A.S.A. and T.A.C.S., and was a University Interscholastic League Legislative Committee member representing Region IV AA. He was a past state president of Instructional Television of Texas and was selected to participate in the Meadows Fellows program. He was elected to serve on the National Committee of American Association of Educational Service Agencies. He belonged to various school and civic organizations and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Bobby often stated that his favorite hobby was spoiling his grandchildren. He loved his family and always enjoyed being with them. He also loved traveling, snow skiing, golfing, hunting, scuba diving, and snorkeling. Spending time with his friends was also very important to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and their daughters and husbands, Robin Etheredge and Carroll, Terri Brown Payne and Don, and their son and wife, Bobby Roberts Jr. and Dana, and nine grandchildren, Caleb and Caleigh Etheredge, Amanda, Alyssa and Amelia Brown, Rachel and Ryan Roberts, and Allison and Laura Payne, all of whom loved him dearly and will miss him terribly. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday morning at First United Methodist Church in Huntsville.
Pallbearers will be Bill Banks, Gordon Brown, Dick Cording, Frank O”Donnell, Charles Park, and Joe Peery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that a contribution be made to the Bobby Roberts” Scholarship Fund which will be given to a student pursuing a career in the education field. Donations may be made to Bank of America, 1 Financial Plaza, Huntsville, Texas 77340.
