Leland Owen was born on March 31, 1914, in McMahan, Texas, at home. He passed from this life on March 23, 2012, in Lockhart, Texas. His father was Odus Owen and mother was Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Handley Owen. He is survived by one brother, Curtis Owen and wife, Edith Owen, of McMahan, Texas, and a host of nieces and nephews and friends.

He was

married to Alta Mae “Peggy” Jowers on October 28, 1937 in Luling, Texas, and lived several years on the family farm at McMahan. Peggy preceded him in death on Dec. 5, 1976. They had no children. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Judson Owen and Odus “Dutch” Owen, Jr.

He spent the next several years of his married life working on the Luling Foundation Farm in Luling; running a locker plant in Lockhart and also in Bishop, Texas. He then got a job at Celanese Chemical Plant in Bishop and later moved to their new plant in Bay City, Texas, where he finished up 30 years for the company. After he retired, he moved back to the old home place where he was born. The last five years of his life were spent in the Parkview Nursing Center in Lockhart.

Leland Owen was known for his generosity, his wit, his love of family genealogy, providing singing tapes to numerous friends, telling a good story, making “Uncle’s Sauce,” his love of hunting, and his devotion to Church and Sacred Harp Singing.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church at McMahan, Texas, and internment will be in Jeffrey Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. on Monday, March 26, at McCurdy Funeral Home in Lockhart.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Ross, Owen K. Ross, Jeb Owen, Greg Bowles, Reed Coates and Billy Huckaby. Conducting the services will be Elder Sonny Huckaby, Pastor of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church and Leland’s great-nephew, Reverend Owen K Ross, Pastor of Christ’s Foundry United Methodist Mission in Dallas, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Bethel Primitive Baptist Church or Jeffrey Cemetery at 8505 Old Colony Line Road, Dale, Texas 78616.
