Bomb threat forces LHS evacuation

What began as a normal Monday morning soon turned hectic as administrators were forced to evacuate Lockhart High School to protect their students.
At around 8:45 a.m. on Monday, a call came to the front office at Lockhart High. The caller said only, “There is a bomb in the building.”
After contacting local law enfo

rcement, Principal Larry Ramirez ordered the school”s 896 students to be moved to Lion Stadium while a thorough inspection of the building was conducted. Still unable to determine whether the threat was a hoax, LHS administrators opted to move the students, faculty and staff off campus altogether, transporting them via bus to the Aviator Theatre.
When students were told they could leave the theatre if a parent checked them out, many opted to call their parents to be picked up. The remaining students were returned to the campus at around 11:45 a.m.
According to information relased by the district on Monday afternoon, administrators decided to close the campus for lunch on Monday to make sure students were safe and accounted for. While the students were off campus, staff from Aramark Food Services and other cafeterias throughout the district prepared sack lunches for the high school students, which were served on campus.
LISD Superintendent Tom Bailey said on Wednesday morning the call appeared to be a hoax, and expressed gratitude for the many organizations that pitched in to help with the situation.
“I really appreciate the people at Aviator Theatre, Aramark, and the other campuses for pitching in to help us out with it,” he said. “The police and fire departments were great, the students were well-behaved, the teachers did a great job. We’re just really fortunate and we really appreciate everyone coming together to make it as good a day as it could have been.”
