A pilot escaped with only minor injuries Thursday afternoon after a small plane experiencing mechanical trouble attempted an emergency landing on FM 671 northwest of Luling before leaving the roadway and crashing into trees.
Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to the crash at approximately 1:05 p.m. Aug. 13 along FM 671 north of Meridian Lane.
A preliminary investigation indicated the aircraft experienced a mechanical issue that prompted the pilot to attempt an emergency landing on the roadway.
The aircraft, described in subsequent reports as a single-engine Piper, was carrying only the pilot at the time. Despite significant damage to the plane, the pilot suffered minor injuries and was evaluated and released at the scene. According to the Caldwell County Constable’s Office, Precinct 2, the aircraft came down in the 6400 block of FM 671. After attempting to land on the highway, the plane left the roadway and came to rest among trees along the side of the road.
Responding deputies initially had to search for the aircraft after the location provided in the first report proved inaccurate. Deputies eventually located the plane about two miles from the originally reported crash site. Once the aircraft was located, deputies provided first aid to the pilot, established a perimeter around the wreckage and began directing traffic while additional emergency personnel arrived.
The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, Mid-County Fire & Rescue and Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol assisted at the scene. Authorities reported no visible fuel or oil spill from the heavily damaged aircraft. Caldwell County Precinct 2 Constable Paul Easterling said the condition of the aircraft made the pilot’s relatively minor injuries particularly fortunate. “Looking at the damage to the aircraft, it’s clear this could have had a much different outcome,” Easterling said. “We’re extremely grateful the pilot was treated at the scene and released. When you look at a scene like this, you can’t help but be thankful for a fortunate outcome, the work of everyone who responded, and the grace of God that kept a serious situation from becoming a tragedy.”
The pilot’s name could not be confirmed at press time and authorities had not identified the specific mechanical problem that led to the emergency landing. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
