August “Gus” Motal, Jr.

August E. Motal, Jr., 66, affectionately known as “Gus,” of Lockhart, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sept. 13, 2010, at Seton Hospital in Austin, surrounded by his family.

Gus was born on Sept. 16, 1943, in Yoakum, Texas to August E. Motal, Sr., and Edith Muska Motal, both of whom preceded him in death.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, Be

tty Patton Motal, whom he lovingly called “B.J.;” daughter, Karen Motal Gossett and her husband, Mike Gossett, of Leander, Texas; daughter Sandra Motal Shelton and her husband, Jeff Shelton, of New Braunfels, Texas; and son, Kenneth Zumwalt and his wife, Jennifer Otto Zumwalt, of Luling, Texas. Gus is also survived by his six grandsons: Blake and Dylan Gossett, Matthew and Philip Shelton, Jarred and Wesley Zumwalt.

Gus leaves behind four siblings: Judy Klesel and her husband, David, of Schulenburg, Texas; Daniel Motal and his wife, Carolyn, of Holland, Texas; Marie Harpin and her husband, David, of Austin, Texas; and Melvin Motal and his wife, Marcia, of Little Rock, Ark; as well as several nieces and nephews, and numerous friends and loved ones.

Gus spent many years as a manager for Perry Bros. in Taylor, San Marcos and Lockhart. He later found his true passion as a “taxman.” Because of his outgoing personality and his desire to help others, he created a thriving business when he bought H & R Block in Lockhart.

Gus always showed love and affection to his family. No one ever got away without a hug or a kiss. The family enjoyed playing games, cards, dominoes, going to the lake house and traveling. Gus loved to barbeque for his family and friends. Everyone was welcome at the Motal house, and there would always be plenty of food. He always enjoyed attending his grandsons’ sporting events. He spent many hours having coffee at the Dairy Queen, where he developed some very close friendships. If you were looking for Gus on a Friday night, he and B.J. would be eating out with friends. Gus will be missed by all who knew him.
