Dave Smith, 76, went home to be with the Lord on Aug. 28, 2009, after an 11-year struggle with cancer.

He was born on March 3, 1933, and was raised in Lockhart by his beloved grandmother, Anna Katherine Heyen.

He played football at Texas A&M and began his football coaching career at Texas A&I University in Kingsville followed by stints at San Antoni

o McArthur, Corsicana, Nederland and Sherman HS. He spent 11 years as assistant and head coach at SMU. One year as head coach at Oklahoma State University. He was also offensive coordinator for Winnipeg and Toronto in the Canadian Football League. His last few years were most special as the PE teacher for physically handicapped kids in the DeSoto and Lancaster School districts. In 1998 he and Judy retired to Granbury, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Jolley.

He is survived by his father, Joel Davis Smith, Sr., his wife Judy Smith; his son, Greg Smith; his daughter, Ann K. Smith; and grandchildren: Amy, Blake, Stephen and Mary Beth Smith. He is also survived by half-sisters, Lisa King and Judi Sisk; and a half-brother, Jody Smith.

A graveside service was held at Holly Hills Memorial Park on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, at 10 a.m. A celebration of his life is planned at McKinney Memorial Church, 4805 Arborlawn Drive, in Ft. Worth on Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be sent to McKinney Memorial Bible Church, 4805 Arborlawn, Ft. Worth, Texas 76109; Oscar Roan Ministries, P.O. Box 1026, Rockwall, Texas 77087; or Coaches Outreach, 1720 Regal Row, Suite 152, Dallas, Texas. 75235.
