Gary David Blome, 78, of Lockhart passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, surrounded by his loving family in Lockhart, Texas.
Gary was born to Rudy and Jessie Blome in Benton, Illinois, on October 4, 1939. He was the second of four children. The family lived in St. Louis, Missouri until 1956 when they relocated to Roswell, New Mexico.
Gary attended and graduated from Roswell High School in 1957 and then attended the University of New Mexico. Gary also attended nursing school and became a licensed vocational nurse. He served his country in the US Army, and then became an administrator in various nursing homes. His work in the nursing homes took Gary to Ballinger, Texas, where he met the love of his life.
Gary married Beth Adkins Cozart on July 6, 1974, in Ballinger, Texas where they raised two children, Roy Todd Cozart and Mary Elizabeth Raxter. Gary and Beth were married for 43 years prior to his death.
In 1982, Gary attended the Dallas Mortuary School and attained his mortician’s license. He served funeral homes in Ballinger, Odessa, and finally Lockhart. Gary and Beth moved to Lockhart in 1990 where Gary worked for McCurdy’s funeral home until 2009. Thereafter, Gary and Beth owned and ran Remembrance Plus Monuments in Lockhart until 2016 when he retired.
Gary was an active member of First Lockhart Baptist Church and the Harvester class for as long as his health permitted. He was a 50 year member of the Masons of New Mexico, receiving his 50 year pin in March 2011.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Rudy and Jessie Blome, one nephew, Greg Knoch, and brother-in-law, Hal Armstrong. Gary is survived by his wife, Beth Blome; son, Roy Cozart; daughter, Elizabeth Raxter; four granddaughters, Christen Cozart, Anna Cozart, Eva Cozart, and Abigail Raxter; one great-granddaughter, Leta Green; brother, Gordon Blome and wife Linda; sister, Judy Armstrong; sister, Janet Richardson and husband Jim; niece, Rachel Tutor and husband Jeff; niece, Crystal Knoch and partner Jessica; nephew Geoff Blome and wife Kerry; as well as great nieces and nephews and friends.
A memorial celebration of Gary’s life will be held on January 6, 2018 at 2pm at the First Lockhart Baptist Church with Gary Rodgers officiating. Gary’s remains will be interred in the Columbarium at First United Methodist Church in Roswell, New Mexico. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Caldwell County Christian Ministries, the ENMU-Roswell Foundation in the name of Hal Armstrong, or a charity of choice.
