Josephine Bunnell, 83, of Lockhart, passed away Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, at Breckenridge Hospital in Austin. She was born on March 27, 1923, in Dallas, Texas, to Thomas Peyton Steger and Maude Jo (Burt) Steger.
Josephine was married to Thomas B. Bunnell on Aug. 24, 1946, in Dallas. She served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, and later earned her ba

chelor”s degree in education at Texas Tech University. She was a wife and mother first, but she also believed in education and helping others. She taught for the Beeville and Austin Independent School Districts, and later with the Adult Learning Center in Lockhart. She and Tom lived in the Austin area for over 29 years before moving to Lockhart in 1986.
Josephine loved the Lord and was active at both of her churches, First Lockhart Baptist Church, and Memorial Methodist Church in Austin. She became a member of the Friendship Class at First Lockhart Baptist Church upon her move to Lockhart. She believed in encouraging and helping others. She received the 1976 Service to Mankind Award for Austin from the NW Austin Sertoma Club for her work with acclimating Vietnamese war refugees, volunteered at St. David”s Hospital Auxiliary, and received the Outstanding Volunteer Tutor award in 1990 from the Caldwell County Literacy League.
Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Maude Steger; and by two brothers, Bob Steger and Tom Steger.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Thomas B. Bunnell of Lockhart; her children, Thomas Burton Bunnell, Jr., and Jodie Bunnell Friedrich and her husband Byron, all of Lockhart; her sisters-in-law, Trail Steger and Dorothy Steger, both of Dallas; three grandchildren, Alison Berry and her husband Chris, Byron T. Friedrich and Joni Friedrich; special cousins, Lula Goswick and Millie Merle Scott, both of Mexia, Eva Lynn Reid of Dallas and Allen Matthews of Dallas.
Visitation was held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, at McCurdy Funeral Home in Lockhart. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2006, at the First Lockhart Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Rodgers officiating. Interment followed in Memory Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Martindale. Pallbearers were Byron Friedrich, Jr., Chris Berry, Warren Friedrich, Dennis Friedrich, Thomas Minh Tran and Byron Friedrich, Sr.
Arrangements were made under the care and guidance of McCurdy Funeral Home, 105 E. Pecan, Lockhart, (512) 398-4791.
