Lady Lions split wins at soccer tourney
The Lady Lions Soccer team participated in the Victoria tournament on Thursday, Jan. 17 and Friday, Jan. 18. The Lady Lions ended their participation with two wins and two losses. Lockhart won 2-1 against San Antonio Holmes and 4-0 against San Antonio Jay. They lost 2-1 against Rockport and 6-0 against Memorial High.
The Lady Lions started their tournament with a 2-1 w
in over San Antonio Holmes on Friday. Brianna Hinnenkamp put in a penalty kick after Meredith Moore was fouled in the box early in the first half.
Holmes answered with a goal ten minutes later and even though the Lady Lions had several great opportunities to score, they could not get one past the Holmes goalkeeper so the game went into a shootout.
Hinnenkamp scored again for the Lady Lions and Lockhart’s goalkeeper, Kelsie Briscoe shut out each of the five Holmes players to earn the ladies their first season win.
The Lady Lions went on to play against the Rockport team and lost 2-1.
“Any other day, time or place and we could have beaten Rockport,” Girls Soccer Coach Colleen Johnston said. “Our legs just weren’t under us after such a long game against Holmes. The girls looked great though.”
Hinnenkamp scored the lone goal for Lockhart.
The Lady Lions played against San Antonio Jay on Saturday. The girls needed to win in order to continue in the tournament and they did just that by dominating the game from the start.
The Lady Lions’ defense was rock solid. Hinnenkamp scored three goals for the Lions and Julia Boykin added a fourth to set the winning score at 4-0.
The last game of the tournament for the Lady Lions was against the home team at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Memorial High School had not played a game since Thursday and they definitely had fresher players.
Despite three games behind them, the Lady Lions dominated the first 20 minutes of the game and held Memorial scoreless, initially. Memorial began to pull away in the latter part of the first half and most of the second. Memorial ended up with a 6-0 win.
The Lady Lions took a sixth place out of 14 participating teams.
Lockhart’s next tournament starts on Thursday, Jan. 24 and ends on Friday, Jan 25. The Lady Lions travel to Leander for that tourney and take on Anderson High School first.
Lady Lion’s first home district game will be against Manor at Lions Stadium on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Games start at 6 p.m.
