Lockhart sophomore Reina Del Castillo wrapped up another productive season at the Regional Meet held at Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Monday. Del Castillo placed 54th overall with a 3.1-mile time of 21:09 out of nearly 200 runners.
Del Castillo qualified as one of the 10 individual spots handed out at the District meet the previous week.

With 10 individual spots for each of the 8 districts in Region IV means the top 80 runners competed, as well as the top three teams from each of the 8 Districts.

“She definitely improved her position today,” Lockhart Head Girls Coach Reuben Ortiz said of Del Castillo. “If you look at the numbers, she should have finished around 80th place but numbers don’t show everything. Our District usually has a stronger showing than other districts and Reina proved that today.

“I even did the numbers on if our team would have qualified, and we would have finished about 17th/18th out of 24 teams, but that just adds more fuel to the fire for next year’s group. We do lose a great group of seniors this year, by my numbers this is the second-best senior group in the last 20 years. We do return some great runners and with Reina to lead us, things look good for our program. She is now a two-time Regional Qualifier as a sophomore, but more importantly has started to develop into a leader as well. This is what we need if our program’s tradition is to continue.”
