Lady Lions beat Crockett with last-second shot

According to Coach Porter the Varsity Lady Lions did an outstanding job of bringing home a victory from their away game against Crockett. The Varsity team sealed the deal with a two-point buzzer-beater by Mariah Carter. The final score was a well-earned 54-52 win for the Lady Lions.
The first quarter of the game was fairly eve
n with nine points going to Lockhart and 11 going to Crockett. Andrea Carter made two shots for a total of four points. M. Carter made four shots for a total of five points. She made a two-point shot and three free throws ending the quarter at 11-9 in favor of Crockett.
In the second quarter the Lady Lions came up with 10 additional points. Unfortunately, Crockett delivered 19 points for a score of 30-19 leaving Lockhart behind by 11 points.
A. Carter contributed three points with a two point shot and a free throw, Vanessa Gonzales made a free throw and Desiree Roland added six points with a couple of two-point shots and two free throws.
With a score of 30-19 on the scoreboard in favor of Crockett glaring at them after the half, the Lady Lions came out roaring in the third quarter and they never looked back. The Lady Lions kept the ball away from their opponents as much as they could. They made 18 baskets and kept Crockett from making more than eight for their team. Scoring for the Lions were A. Carter and Chelsy Martinez with two two-point shots each. D. Roland scored six points with three two-pointers. M. Carter made three points with a two-point shot and a free throw. Vanessa Gonzales added one point with a free throw. The Lady Lions drove hard on the court and brought the score to a 38-37 leaving them just one point behind at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter proved to be the best for the Lady Lions who worked hard to earn a triumphant win against a worthy opponent. M. Carter pulled the team ahead and over the finish line with a total of 10 out of the 17 points put on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter.
She made four two-point shots and two free throws. Martinez added five points with a two-point shot and a much-needed three-pointer. Gonzales made two free throws making the total points for the fourth quarter a whopping 17 points. By far the most memorable shot had to have been the game winning buzzer beater by M. Carter with one second left in the game.
“It was awesome,” said Coach Porter. “You just had to be there. It was an amazing shot with just one split second left to go on the clock and Mariah just nailed it. I”m really proud of the team for pulling together and winning this game.”
The final score was an impressive 52-54 with Lockhart as the final victor in a hard fought match against Crockett.
The next home game for the Lady Lion Basketball teams is on Friday, Jan. 5 at the LHS Lion Gym.
