If you’re headed to the Gaslight-Baker Theatre this July, keep an eye out for a mischievous little character named Eric, and the young actor playing him might just steal the show.
Mordecai Cruser, making his musical theatre debut, is stepping into the spotlight in Matilda the Musical, running July 11 through August 3 in downtown Lockhart. Cruser is already showing a knack for comedy, timing, and scene-stealing stage presence, especially when he starts stretching his ears in character (yes, really!).
“This is Mordecai’s first full-length musical,” says a member of the production team, “and he’s really pulling off a good time. He’s fearless and fun, just like Eric should be.”
Cruser is thrilled to be part of the cast and says the experience has been nothing short of amazing. Offstage, he’s just as energetic and well-rounded. He enjoys video games, crafting, being outdoors, and even admits to loving P.E. class. He’s also a proud dog owner, his pup, Nebula, is reportedly his biggest fan.
The show itself promises laughs, heart, and high-energy musical numbers that will have audiences tapping their toes and rooting for the kids. Based on Roald Dahl’s beloved story, Matilda the Musical follows a clever young girl who discovers her strength and uses it to stand up for what’s right, with a little help from her classmates, including Eric.
Two performances worth circling on your calendar:
• Opening Night on Thursday, July 11, with half-priced tickets, already more than halfway sold out.
•Understudy Night on Friday, July 18, where the whole company (including those who don’t always get the spotlight) gets a chance to shine.
So, whether you’re a fan of musical theatre or just looking for a fun night out with the family, Matilda the Musical offers plenty of laughs, music, and a healthy dose of mischief. And if you spot Cruser onstage, stretching his ears with pride, be sure to cheer, Lockhart might just be looking at one of its rising stars.
